Marine heatwave forecasts – 21 June 2025

The marine heatwave bulletin provides forecasts and analysis of marine heatwave events across the globe and throughout the year. Used datasets include observations (satellite sea surface temperature maps) and numerical model analyses (assimilating satellite and in situ observations) to derive marine heatwave forecasts for a 10-day period. This week’s forecasts were produced using as a comparison the marine heatwave situation on 10/06/2025.

Tropical Atlantic

The marine heatwave in the Gulf of Mexico is decreasing in extent, but its intensity remains within the strong categories. The marine heatwave stretching from the eastern coast of Florida to the offshore waters of Europe is intensifying, with a larger area falling into strong categories.

North Pacific

The marine heatwave in the central basin around 30°N is expanding and intensifying, with the emergence of the extreme category in the Bering Sea.

Indian Ocean

The marine heatwave in the middle of the basin is decreasing in surface area, with only a few scattered moderate events remaining. The heatwave in the Bay of Bengal has disappeared.

North Atlantic Ocean

The marine heatwave off the western coasts of France and Spain is intensifying, with a larger area in the strong categories and the local emergence of severe categories

Mediterranean Sea

The marine heatwave in the basin is increasing in both extent and intensity, with the development of strong categories and the emergence of severe categories off the southeastern coast of Spain
