Marine heatwave Bulletin
Forecasts for 18 October 2025​

  • Mediterranean sea – marine heatwaves remain stable at moderate categories.
  • Tropical Atlantic – m around the Caribean Sea and the Gulf  of México, the marine heatwave remains at strong categories. Around 30°W and near the equator the marine heatwave is decreasing in area. 
  • Tropical Pacific – in the Philippine Sea the marine heatwave is increasing in area, with the emergence of strong categories.

Mediterranean Sea

Marine heatwaves in the Mediterranean Sea remain stable in area. The western basin is affected only by moderate categories. 

Global Ocean

Tropical Atlantic

The marine heatwave present in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea remains stable with strong categories. The marine heatwave located around 30°W and near the equator is decreasing, with only a few scattered areas persisting.

North Pacific

The marine heatwave located between the Japanese and North American coasts remains stable in area, with moderate to strong categories. The marine heatwave present in the Sea of Japan is decreasing in both intensity and area. The marine heatwave present in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea is decreasing in area, but its intensity remains within strong to severe and locally extreme categories.

Tropical Pacific

The marine heatwave in the Philippine Sea is increasing in area, with the emergence of strong categories. The extent of the marine heatwave around Papua New Guinea and Indonesia remains stable in area, with the presence of strong and moderate categories.

Indian Ocean

The marine heatwave located around the equator off the coast of Sumatra is decreasing in area but remains within strong and locally severe categories. The marine heatwave in the Bay of Bengal is increasing in area, with the presence of strong and moderate categories.
