Marine heatwave forecasts – 28 June 2025

The marine heatwave bulletin provides forecasts and analysis of marine heatwave events across the globe and throughout the year. Used datasets include observations (satellite sea surface temperature maps) and numerical model analyses (assimilating satellite and in situ observations) to derive marine heatwave forecasts for a 10-day period. This week’s forecasts were produced using as a comparison the marine heatwave situation on 17/06/2025.

Tropical Atlantic

The marine heatwave in the Gulf of Mexico is decreasing in extent, but its intensity remains within the strong categories. The marine heatwave stretching from the eastern coast of Florida to the offshore waters of Europe is intensifying, with a larger area falling into strong categories.

North Pacific

The marine heatwave in the central basin around 30°N is expanding and intensifying, with a greater area affected by strong and severe categories, in particular south of Japan, as well as locally extremes.

Tropical Pacific

A marine heatwave of mainly moderate and strong categories is developing between Papua New Guinea and Japan.

North Atlantic Ocean

The marine heatwave off the western coasts of France and Spain is intensifying, with the development of severe categories and locally extremes. In the North Sea, a marine heatwave of moderate category is developing. The extent of the marine heatwave which extended from the east of Florida to the center of the basin is decreasing, while its intensity is increasing near the American coasts, with the development of strong and severe categories.

Mediterranean Sea

The marine heatwave west of the basin is increasing in intensity, with the development of strong categories west of the Italian coasts and off the Tunisian coasts. East of the basin, the extent and the intensity of the marine heatwave are decreasing.
