Marine heatwave category forecasts for 5 September, 2026 for the European zone. Data: GLO12. Source: Copernicus Marine Service/Mercator Ocean International.
The marine heatwave affecting virtually the entire basin (except for the eastern region south of Greece) remains stable in terms of area but is increasing in intensity. However, in two areas (south and east of Spain, as well as south of Crete), a decrease in area is observed.
The marine heatwave in the North Atlantic, stretching from south of the British Isles to the Caribbean, is decreasing in intensity, shifting from moderate to severe categories to mostly moderate and locally strong categories, but remains stable in terms of area.

Marine heatwave category forecasts for 5 September, 2026 for the global ocean. Data: GLO12. Source: Copernicus Marine Service/Mercator Ocean International.
The marine heatwave in the Gulf of Mexico is increasing in intensity, with the area covered by strong categories expanding.
The marine heatwave off the coast of Guinea is expanding in both area and intensity, with mostly strong categories and locally extreme conditions.
The marine heatwave south of the Bering Sea (around 50°N), as well as those in the Sea of Korea and the Sea of Japan, are decreasing in area and intensity.
The marine heatwave extending across nearly the entire equatorial band from 30°S to 25°N is decreasing in area but remains generally stable in intensity, with most events classified as strong or severe.
The marine heatwave west and south of New Zealand remains stable in both area and intensity.
Marine heatwaves in the basin remain stable at the surface, with conditions still ranging from moderate to strong, but the one southwest of India is increasing in intensity.
The marine heatwave stretching from Brazil to South Africa remains generally stable, with conditions still mostly in the moderate range and locally in the strong range.
