Marine heatwave Bulletin
Forecasts for 13 June 2026

Key takeaways

Mediterranean Sea – A marine heatwave of moderate-to-severe intensity in the south of Sicily and Greece is intensifying.

North Atlantic – Off the coast of Norway, a large-scale heatwave of severe to strong intensity has developed in an area north of 60°N that is currently ice-freeThe marine heatwave in the Bay of Biscay is decreasing in both area and intensity

Equatorial Pacific – The marine heatwave extending across nearly the entire equatorial axis from 0° to 15°N remains stable in area but is increasing in intensity, reaching severe to extreme levels in some areas.

North Atlantic

The marine heatwaves in the Gulf of Mexico and northeast of the Caribbean are decreasing in both area and intensity.

South Atlantic

The marine heatwave located at the centre of the basin is decreasing both in area and intensity.

North Pacific

The marine heatwave near 180°W and 50°N is expanding in area and intensity, reaching extreme levels locally. The marine heatwave in the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea is increasing in intensity and area. The marine heatwave extending across nearly the entire equatorial axis from 0° to 15°N remains stable in area but is increasing in intensity, reaching severe to extreme levels in some areas. The marine heatwave around the Philippines and Indonesia is decreasing in area, with only a few scattered areas of moderate intensity remaining.

South Pacific

The marine heatwave in the central South Pacific around 110°W is decreasing both in area and intensity.
The marine heatwave located north of the Fiji archipelago is decreasing in intensity. The marine heatwave south of New Zealand is increasing in intensity.

Southern Ocean

The marine heatwave, extending from 50°E to 120°E in longitude and 45°S to 60°S in latitude, remains stable at the surface but is decreasing in intensity, with moderate and strong conditions persisting.
