The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research, and Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, together with Mercator Ocean International and VLIZ launched the European Digital Twin of the Ocean a key element of the Digital Ocean Knowledge System to support the EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters, and Green Deal.

The objective of this event is:

  • Present the EU DTO vision and report on progress to date
  • Provide from a technical workshop, held on 14 June, involving experts from approximately 50 invited research organisations and projects to gather their input on the development of the EU DTO, methods for potential contributions
  • Engage in forward looking discussion on how the EU DTO should serve Ocean communities and actors, how it should evolve, and how it will impact policy and decision making

The European Digital of the Twin Ocean (EU DTO) aims at making ocean knowledge readily available to citizens, entrepreneurs, scientists and policymakers by providing them with an innovative set of user-driven, interactive and visualisation tools.  Leveraging on existing European science and assets, the European DTO will provide consistent high-resolution, multi-dimensional descriptions of the ocean. This includes its physical, chemical, biological, socio-ecological and economic dimensions, with forecasting periods ranging from seasons to multi-decades.

The European DTO is a collaborative environment, that will be founded on a digital operational backbone (henceforth called the European Digital Twin Ocean INFRA or EDITO- INFRA), providing the architecture for EU projects to upload and share their own ocean science and data.

The June 15, 2023, Digital Ocean Forum event is one of the key elements of the co-creation of the EU DTO. After the successful first edition, mobilising the marine and high-tech community to set up the groundwork of the EU DTO project, this second edition will gather many European projects to bring their needs and contribution to the co-construction of the DTO project.

The development of the European DTO is a collaborative process. It aims at coordinating the contributions of the many marine or technological projects and initiatives funded by the European Union, setting up a two-way interaction with each project. It is expected from each project to benefit from and to contribute to the EU DTO marine content and infrastructure. This will result in integrating the best ocean science and data already available, limiting duplicaiton of efforts, and increasing the global and individual impact of each project contributing to the development of the EU DTO.
