April 2026 set to be the second - warmest April on record for the ocean as equatorial Pacific hits record sea surface temperatures
Toulouse, France, 27 April – Early estimates by the Copernicus Marine Service indicate that April 2026 is likely to become the second-warmest April on record for the global ocean, with average sea surface temperatures of 21.07°C—following closely the April 2024 record (21.10°C). These estimates are based on the analysis and 10-day forecast system from the European Union’s Copernicus Marine Service, implemented by Mercator Ocean International.

Mercator Ocean International Makes AI Ocean Forecasting Operational with GLONET Validated by OceanBench at NeurIPS 2025
SAN DIEGO & TOULOUSE, France – 10 December 2025 — At NeurIPS 2025, one of the world’s leading AI conferences, Mercator Ocean International unveiled OceanBench, the first open benchmark designed to assess AI Ocean forecasting models. This milestone follows the publication of Mercator Ocean’s AI model GLONET in September. Together, OceanBench and GLONET represent a decisive step toward integrating artificial intelligence into operational ocean forecasting, strengthening Europe’s leadership in trustworthy, AI-driven predictions at global scale.

At the Digital Ocean Forum 2025, the European Digital Twin Ocean enters a new phase to strengthen open collaboration across the marine community
The European Digital Twin Ocean, a flagship EU initiative turning ocean data into actionable knowledge, has entered its second phase with a €14 million investment. Led by Mercator Ocean International and the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) on behalf of the European Commission, this new stage — known as EDITO2 (2025–2028) — will both enhance the platform’s technological capabilities and expand co-creation with Europe’s marine community.
