High-Level Meeting – “Transforming Mercator Ocean into an Intergovernmental Organization”

The transformation of Mercator Ocean International into an intergovernmental organization (IGO) was announced during the One Ocean Summit in February 2022 through the Brest Declaration signed by France, Spain, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom; its creation is now a scientific deliverable of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) to be held in Nice in June 2025.

The Earth warming has been accelerating for the past sixty years according to a new study led by Mercator Ocean International oceanographers

A recently released study led by Mercator Ocean International’s Audrey Minière and Karina von Schuckmann provides compelling evidence that the Earth system has been cumulating heat at an increasingly faster pace since 1960. This accelerated warming is mostly captured by the Ocean, which is the most important heat reservoir of our planet. A significant milestone in climate science, this study sheds light on the rapid changes our planet is experiencing.

State of the climate in Europe 2022 report

The State of the Climate in Europe 2022 report was published today, and it is the second edition of this annual series. This joint publication by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service summarizes the state of the climate, and the extreme and high-impact weather and climate events in 2022 for the Regional Association for Europe WMO RA VI (Europe) domain, in the context of long-term climate variability and climate change. Mercator Ocean International has contributed with analysis surrounding sea surface temperature, ocean heat content and marine heatwaves, supported with Copernicus Marine Service data and indicators.

New Indicators Project for Tracking Our Changing Climate

Today, leading scientists that contributed to the recent IPCC report of working group 1 on climate change have launched a project to update key climate indicators every year so people can be kept informed about critical aspects of global warming. As a partner of this project, Mercator Ocean International (MOi) contributes expertise to finding the Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI), the primary indicator used to understand the extent of human-induced global warming, which has more than doubled in the last two decades. The EEI is directly related to ocean heat because the ocean absorbs some 90% of the human-driven heat trapped in the Earth system.

Mercator Ocean contributes to the annual WMO climate report, shows rapid ocean warming

The much-awaited state of the global climate annual report has been published by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), presenting an overview of the climate and weather conditions throughout the year 2022. Along with various meteorological and hydrological organizations worldwide, Mercator Ocean International contributed to the report, revealing recent and rapid ocean warming. The report also evaluates essential climate metrics including greenhouse gas emissions, temperature fluctuations, sea level increase, and ocean acidification.

Ocean absorbing 89% of climate warming according to an international team of scientists led by Mercator Ocean International

A new study shows that 89% of the excess heat built up in the Earth system from 1960-2020 has been absorbed by the Ocean. An international team of 70 researchers from 15 countries led by Mercator Ocean International’s Karina von Schuckmann revealed their results today in a paper published in the journal Earth System Science Data.
