Last month, the Ocean Forecasting Co-Design Team of the OceanPrediction Decade Collaborative Center (OceanPrediction DCC) authored a special issue in the State of the Planet Journal focused on Ocean forecasting. The publication is the result of a two-year work that saw the contribution of 68 authors from the Ocean forecasting co-design team, including the regional teams, with support from the Ocean Decade programmes (DITTO, OBPS/Ocean Practices, and OceanPredict/Foresea) and contributions from 12 Mercator Ocean International‘s experts.

The publication, titled “Ocean Prediction: Present Status and State of the Art”, features 26 peer-reviewed papers and provides a global overview of the current state of ocean prediction, highlighting its capabilities and innovations, and describing its role as a vital tool for informed decision-making in areas such as marine safety, coastal management and disaster risk reduction. The collection also explores emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing, illustrating their growing impact on the future of ocean science.
Mercator Ocean scientists involved in the publication include Enrique Alvarez Fanjul, Pierre Bahurel, Alain Arnaud, Pierre-Yves Le Traon, Lillian Diarra, Romane Zufic, Marina Tonani, Yann Drillet, Audrey Hasson, Cecile Thomas-Courcoux and Angelique Melet.
The next issue is already in development and will focus on gap analysis and future directions informed by this latest publication.
The OceanPrediction DCC hosted by Mercator Ocean International, is an Ocean Decade cross-cutting structure working at the global scale to develop collaboration between Decade Actions and other key actors with the aim to enhance Ocean prediction capabilities, knowledge sharing, and cooperation. To support its global mobilization efforts, the OceanPrediction DCC has developed an ATLAS to map ocean forecasting activities worldwide. The OceanPrediction DCC works through nine Regional Teams, and partners of other Decade initiatives. On the technical front, the OceanPrediction DCC has created a guiding framework for building, operating, and promoting Best Practices in ocean forecasting systems, as well as supporting the development of downstream services.
State of the Planet (SP) is a journal dedicated to the publication of scientific synthesis reports and assessments on all subjects of the Earth and environmental sciences.
